De meesten begrijpen het niet, waarom je voor de islam kiest. Daarom schrijf ik deze tekst. Op die manier kan ik mijn hartje luchten, het uitleggen, aan al wie het wil horen. Het is niet mijn bedoeling om iemand te bekeren, enkel te informeren. Misschien kan ik zo ook wat steun bieden aan andere bekeerlingen.

Hij toont de schoonheid van de islam. islam gaat niet in de eerste plaats over het opleggen van regels, het gaat over vrede, studeren, denken, ieder voor zichzelf in relatie tot Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’Ala = Geprezen en Verheven is Hij). Het is de bedoeling dat je Allah’s swt woord volgt, maar het is natuurlijk beter als je ten volle begrijpt wat Hij swt vraagt. De profeet Mohammed (vrede en zegeningen zijn met hem) heeft gezegd dat het heel belangrijk is te studeren, heel je leven lang.
Wat ik ook mooi vind, is dat er niemand tussen Allah swt en jou staat. Mijn lief ventje zegt ook soms: dat is tussen Allah swt en jou. Een goeie moslim zal ook niet oordelen over anderen, dat is de job van Allah swt. Echt moeilijk trouwens, daarom schrijf ik een “goeie moslim” . De zonden die je hebt begaan, zullen op de dag des oordeels behandeld worden door Allah swt. Je vraagt niet zomaar eventjes vergiffenis aan een priester en doet dan even de gebedjes die hij je oplegt, zoals in het christendom.
Ik heb telkens het gevoel als ik over islam lees, dat alles mooi op zijn plaats valt, het is allemaal zo logisch, terwijl het christendom vroeger alleen maar meer vragen opwekte: “de drievuldigheid???”
Het feit dat God swt al die profeten gezonden heeft: ik vroeg eens aan Zülfü, waarom God swt dan geen profeet heeft gezonden naar ons, onlangs, hier zijn toch veel ‘ongelovigen in islam’? Zülfü zei: “Dat heeft Hij swt toch gedaan?” De christenen kennen Jezus vzmh en Jezus vzmh heeft gezegd dat er nog een profeet zou komen. En hij is gekomen, relatief gezien, nog niet zo heel lang geleden. Alleen zijn veel christenen te hoogmoedig om de profeet Mohammed vzmh te volgen en hun fouten te erkennen, hoewel hij enkel het christendom tot perfectie heeft gebracht in islam. Ik zeg ”veel christenen, want er waren (in de tijd van de profeet Mohammed vzmh) en er zijn nog altijd enorm veel christenen die zich wel bekeren. De joden wisten ook dat er nog een profeet zou komen, ze zaten er op te wachten (nog steeds). Velen erkenden de profeet Mohammed vzmh als profeet, maar er was een politieke reden om het niet te doen: de profeet Mohammed vzmh was een nakomeling van hun vijanden, niet een van hen, dus hij vzmh kon niet hun profeet zijn. Ze zouden al hun macht als volk afstaan, als ze hem vzmh zouden volgen.
Dit heb ik geleerd toen ik een boek over het leven van de profeet Mohammed vzmh las. Als je ooit echt meer wil weten over islam, moet je daarmee beginnen. De profeet Mohammed vzmh is trouwens het grote voorbeeld van alle moslims.
Maar ik ben wel eerst beginnen te geloven in ‘iets’, daarna heb ik me pas bekeerd tot de islam:
Waarom zijn wij zo anders dan de dieren, waarom denken wij als enigen na over de zin van het leven? Als je natuurkunde en scheikunde bekijkt: alles heeft een reden of een doel, alles past ‘toevallig’ in mekaar. Dus dat talent van ons, waardoor we nadenken over de betekenis van het leven, dat moet toch met een bedoeling zijn en vanwaar komt dit? Dit was een van de grote redenen waarom ik terug begon te geloven dat er misschien toch een god bestond. Einstein en Newton waren trouwens ook gelovig.
Ik ben ook terug een beetje meer beginnen te geloven in ‘iets’ na het lezen van het boek ‘The secret’, daar spreken ze vooral over het ‘universum’ dat alles in banen leidt en je wensen en gedachten kan ‘horen’. De kern van het boek zegt dat de wet van de aantrekkingskracht ook geldig is voor gedachten, met veel hedendaagse getuigenissen maar ook veel quotes uit verschillende godsdiensten. Dus als je dankbaar bent voor de goede dingen die je hebt, positief denkt, krijg je positieve zaken aangetrokken. Ze gaan zelfs zo ver dat als je letterlijk iets wenst en er echt in gelooft, je het ook zal krijgen. Nu, als je in dat boek het ‘universum’ vervangt door het woordje ‘God’ of ‘Allah’, dan klopt het gewoon. In de islam is het ook zeer belangrijk om dankbaar te zijn. Als we gaan slapen, zeggen we: Bismillah (in naam van God). Als we wakker worden, zeggen we: Alhamdullillah (dankzij God). Hetzelfde met voor en na eten, drinken, op reis vertrekken, enz… Zelfs in een gewone conversatie zal een moslim steeds God swt bedanken, door bv. ‘Alhamdullillah’ ertussen te gooien.
Dankbaar zijn is sowieso voor iedereen aan te raden, ook ongelovigen. Word wakker en denk: wow, een nieuwe dag, dank je! Nog een goede tip: terwijl je je klaarmaakt ’s ochtends, bedenk dan zoveel mogelijk zaken waar je dankbaar voor bent. Dat kan gaan van je oma die nog leeft tot aan die snoepjes, die kleine rode hartjes, die je zo lekker vindt. Als je dankbaar bent, word je automatisch gelukkiger, je zal wel zien.
Alhoewel het een beetje een contradictie is dat ook de ongelovigen voor alles dankbaar moeten zijn. Want wie moet je bedanken voor een zonnige dag, als je niet gelooft? Naar het schijnt wordt het Arabische woord kafir in de Koran in het Nederlands vertaald als ongelovige, maar het betekent letterlijk ondankbare. Daarom wordt ongeloof zo negatief beschreven in de Koran. Wegens de ondankbaarheid.
Dit is natuurlijk niet het volledige antwoord op de vraag: Waarom islam?
Het enige dat ik nog kan zeggen, hoe meer ik las, hoe meer ik overtuigd raakte. Ik kon gewoon niet terug. Het is zoals wanneer je te weten komt op jonge leeftijd dat je een meisje bent, ze moeten je daarna ook niets anders wijsmaken. Most people don’t understand why you choose Islam. That’s why I wrote this column. This way I can explain to them who want to know. It is not my intention to convert somebody else, only to inform. And maybe I can be a support to other converts.

He is really showing the beauty of islam. Islam is not about the rules, it’s about peace, study, learning, thinking for yourself having a relationship between you and Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’Ala = glorious and exalted is He). You are supposed to follow Allah’s word swt, but only when you understand completely what He swt is asking of you. The prophet Mohammed (may peace be upon him) himself said it is really important to study, your whole life long.
What’s so beautiful to me: there is nobody between Allah swt and you. My lovely husband said it before: it is between Allah swt and you. A good moslim will not judge other people, that is Allah’s job swt. That is really hard by the way, that is why I write ‘a good moslim’. The sins you committed will be treated bij Allah swt on the day of judgement. So you can’t ask forgiveness of a priest and say the amount of prayers, like in the christian religion.
Each time I read about islam, I have the feeling everything is falling into place. It is all so logical. When I was a christian, it only delivered more questions: “The trinity???”
And about the fact that God swt send all those prophets: I once asked Zülfü why God swt didn’t send us a prophet, here and recently. Lots of people here don’t belief in islam. Zülfü said: “But He swt did!” The crhistians know Jezus pbuh and Jezus pbuh said there would be a next prophet. And he came, not sò long ago. Only lots of christians are too haughty to follow the prophet Mohammed pbuh and acknowledge there mistakes, allthough he only put the christian religion into perfection in islam. I say ‘lots of christians’ because there were (in the prophet Mohammeds days pbuh) and there still are lots of christians who do convert to islam. The jews also knew there was going to be another prophet, they were waiting for him actually. Lots of them converted and said Mohammed pbuh was the prophet, but there was a political reason not to convert for most of them. The prophet Mohammed was not one of them, but he was born within the enemy so therefore he couldn’t be the prophet the jews were waiting for. If they would follow him pbuh, the jewish people would loose all of their power.
I have learned a little about this subject, when I was reading a book about the life of the prophet Mohammed pbuh. If you ever want to learn about islam, read about the prophet Mohammed pbuh first. By the way, the prophet Mohammed pbuh is the big example for all muslims.
But before I became a muslim, I started to believe in ’something’ again:
Why are we so different then the animals? Why are we the only ones who think about the reason of all of this? If you think about physics or chemistry: everything has a reason or a goal, everything fits together ‘by accident’. So that talent of ours, thinking about the meaning of life, there has to be a reason for it and where does it come from? This was one of the biggest reasons why I start to think there maybe was a god out there. By the way, Einstein and Newton were religious people to.
I also started to believe more after reading the book ‘The secret’. In which they talk about the Universe guiding everything and listening to your thoughts and wishes. The book claims that the laws of attraction are also valid for thoughts, not only objects, by using lots of contemporary testimonies and also references from different religions. So if you are grateful for the positive things in life you received and you are a positive thinker, positive things will happen to you more. They even say if you wish something, and truly believe in it, you will receive wathever you wished for. Well, if you take the book and you would change the word ‘universe’ with the word ‘God’ or ‘Allah’, everything fits. It is also very important in Islam that you are grateful for everything that is given to you. When we go to sleep, we say ‘Bismillah’ (In the name of Allah). When we wake up, we say ‘Alhamdullillah’ (thanks to Allah). And we do the same with eating, drinking, travelling,… Even in a regular conversation a muslim will keep thanking God swt, for example by using the word ‘Alhamdullillah’.
I would advise it to everybody: being grateful, really grateful. Also to the people who don’t believe. Wake up and think: wow, a new day, thank you. Another really good tip: when you get yourself ready in the morning, think about as many things possible that you can be grateful for. This can be the fact that your grandmother is still allive, but this can also be a kind of sweets that you really love. If you are grateful, you will get happy, automatically. You will see…
Of course, this is not the complete answer to the question: Why islam?
The only thing left for me to say: the more I read, the more I get convinced. I just couldn’t go back. It is like, when you are really young, and you find out at one point you are a girl: they don’t have to tell you otherwise anymore.
